National Fire Prevention Week: Don’t Wait Check the Date!

By October 11, 2016February 24th, 2021No Comments

Next week is National Fire Prevention Week and once again this year the focus is on smoke alarms. This year’s theme is Don`t Wait Check the date:

How often do smoke detectors need to be replaced and where can viewers find the date on their smoke detectors?

Melville Assistant Fire Chief Dan Lafata and Chris Wilhelm of Tech Electronics share the importance of having working smoke alarms in your home and other fire prevention tips.

The importance of having working smoke alarms in homes, especially in newer homes and where smoke alarms should be placed in your home to effectively safeguard your family and your home.

Smoke alarms are a family`s first line of defense in a fire event, and a recent NFPA survey shows that only a small percentage of people know how old their smoke alarms are or how often they need to be replaced. Research shows 3 out of 5 fire related deaths are a result of malfunctioning or lack of smoke alarms in the home. That’s one of many reasons they’re kicking off Fire Prevention Week by partnering with the Mehlville Fire Protection District for a smoke alarm blitz.

On Saturday, October 8th Wilhelm, a resident fire alarm expert and firefighters from #1 House will be going door-to-door inspecting and installing new smoke detectors in area homes.
