Video Walls Are Increasing in Popularity as Display Costs Fall

By Rob Clayton, Senior AV Solutions Designer

Business owners may default on TVs or projectors as a more traditional fix for their display needs, but video walls can provide a more elegant and effective solution.

A video wall can be used to create larger-than-life displays without some of the constraints of more traditional display solutions. Video walls use several different technologies to produce images, each with its own use cases.

Is a Video Wall Right for Me?

While projectors or TVs have fewer up-front costs, they both come with constraints that can be solved with video walls.

TVs with LCD technology can be combined to create larger displays, but the bezels, or borders, on the TVs will create separations in the image.

Historically, projectors have been used for larger display applications, since they can produce a large image using a screen. However, projectors come with their own constraints.

Projectors are not as effective in spaces with lots of ambient light. Their displays are not as bright as a TV and can lack contrast. Projectors also have ongoing maintenance costs as they use bulbs or lasers to emit the light used to create an image.

“When you start thinking about the cost of a laser projector in conjunction with the cost of an LED wall, they’re pretty close now, and you’re going to have the LED wall a lot longer than you are a video projector,”

said Rob Clayton, Tech Electronics Solutions Designer.

While newer projectors using laser technology have a longer shelf life, in most cases, there are still fewer maintenance costs associated with video walls.

Clayton said laser projectors can typically last up to 50,000 hours, but a direct-view LED display can often run for over 100,000 hours.

Projector prices are also rising as laser technology is being implemented, while costs associated with LED displays are steadily decreasing. Price changes paired with ongoing maintenance can mean that video walls can be a more cost-effective solution.

Projectors also require distance from the screen to clearly display an image, while video walls provide more flexibility in size and shape.

They can also be used in conjunction with Tech’s other core services.

Video walls are especially well-suited to command-and-control centers, where end users need a large, clear picture to monitor a breadth of different programs

They are also modular, allowing for customization on how many workstations display at once and how large they are.
