Since 2020, telehealth appointments have become a vital part of care plans, expanding access to services like therapy and cutting down on driving time to care facilities for patients.
According to a study on the effect of virtual nursing implementation on emergency department efficiency and quality of care, “virtual nursing was associated with shorter wait times, more complete nursing documentation, and fewer interruptions during admission assessments.”
In 2024, the Health Resources and Services Administration reported that 95% of the health centers they funded used telehealth for primary care appointments.
Another 2024 study from the National Library of Medicine found that telehealth attendance remained high long after its expansion during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The authors also concluded that “telehealth could continue to be leveraged following COVID-19 to improve access to care and health equity.”
Regulatory hurdles
To offer these services, providers must find technology solutions that can seamlessly integrate with care platforms and provide the security necessary to maintain HIPPA compliance.
These same solutions must also integrate with conferencing software like Microsoft Teams or Zoom so communication between families, care teams, and patients, is clear.
Then there are the different kinds of meetings required, whether that is a one-on-one meeting between a therapist or primary care physician and a patient, or an entire care team meeting from different facilities.
In my time in management at a long-term care facility, these meetings suffered from patchy connection, and constantly reintroducing speakers so instructions were understood and patient needs were state clearly.
